The Know Your Rights Initiative is a project of The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare Foundation(NCF), a 501 C(3) organization located in Washington, D.C. whose mission is to protect, promote, and ensure the financial security, health, and well-being of current and future generations of older Americans through research, analysis, and public education. NCF is affiliated with the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare which is the number one advocacy group fighting to protect Social Security and Medicare for all citizens.
In early April, The Know Your Rights Initiative will convene a Town Hall in our area to educate the LGBT community about their potential for enhanced financial resources under Social Security. Open to all, the Town Hall will include Members of Congress from our area as well as national and local experts on this issue.
The Know Your Rights Initiative began in 2013 and has successfully educated more than 1,000 members of the LGBT Community through six Town Halls in California and one in Boston. Under spousal benefits, one of many categories of benefits under Social Security, an eligible same-sex married couple could receive as much as $500 more per month if they file for claims under Windsor.
Oakland is one of six sites throughout California where Town Halls will be convened throughout the year. Funded by a generous grant from The California Wellness Foundation, this educational outreach will have a very positive impact on our community.
We hope that you can participate in this important gathering, which is a kick-off event preceding the larger Town Hall in early April. Please RSVP to Evelyn Torres at [email protected]
