In conjunction with the 5th annual Oakland 2014 Pride festival, the East Bay’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) celebration, an historic exhibition of memorabilia and photographs documenting two decades of Bay Area lesbians of color spanning the mid 1970’s through the mid 1990’s, will be on display at the Oakland Public Main Library from August 9, through August 31, 2014.

FIERCE SISTAHS! Bay Area Lesbians of Color 1975 - 1995 is curated by Lenn Keller from her personal collection. Keller, an Oakland based independent historian, photographer and filmmaker is also the founder of the Bay Area Lesbian History Archives Project.

The exhibition is a segment of the original 2010 exhibition at the James Hormel Gay & Lesbian Center of the San Francisco Main Library, and will be on display at the Oakland Public Main Library from August 9, 2014 through August 31, 2014.

On the heels of the anti-war, black power, gay and women’s liberation movements of the early 1970’s, a tiny but powerful lesbian of color community emerged that pushed the envelope of Bay Area activism and culture. Over the last four decades, the Bay Area lesbian of color community, which is primarily located in the East Bay, has grown quite large and diverse, and continues to exert socially progressive leadership in Bay Area culture and social justice activism.

Keller has curated a powerful exhibition of images rarely represented in mainstream society -- the culture and histories of lesbian of color activists, artists and community that offer much of value to all of us now and to historians of the future. The exhibit is a rare and unique opportunity to learn from and about the culture and histories of Bay Area lesbian of color activists, artists and community."
